LONG ANSWERS

Appearance: Dan is a good-looking guy, with very deep brown eyes, a handsome face and a ready smile. He’s fairly broad-shouldered, but there’s barely any spare fat to him; he enjoys cross-country running and spends at least a few hours a week in the gym, just because he finds exercise very satisfying.

His tastes in clothes tends to be pretty simple. Average. He cuts his wavy brown hair himself, and it’s always a little on the deliberately scruffy side, but in the long, aren’t-I-cute-and-interesting way, rather than the I-don’t-care way his sister wears hers.

In fact, if you didn’t know, you wouldn’t peg him and Bethan as related at all. Certainly not as twins. Although perhaps there’s something around the jawline and mouth that might link them.

Played-By: Brendan Fehr, http://shattered-reflection.org/sodamaged/brendanfehr/2.png

Likes & Dislikes: Dan loves being outside, loves running, climbing, cycling and walking. His family is incredibly dear to him. He’s a big fan of cheesy pop, dance music and terrible 80s rock, and he has a particular love for supernatural TV dramas and superhero movies. He’s also pretty keen on math and science; although he really doesn’t test well in any subjects and is likely to do far worse in school than he really deserves, astronomy is one of his favourite hobbies outside sports. He also plays drums (badly), keyboard (worse) and bass (pretty well, actually).

Among the things he hates are the stupid things his sister does, which makes him worry like mad. He’s also not a big fan of boredom. Or heights (he’s only ok with climbing because the ropes make him feel more secure). He doesn’t like conflict, either, although he’ll fight to protect the people he cares about.

Strengths & Weaknesses: Dan is, like most Milligans, as stubborn as hell on important issues, so he can be hard to beat down. Also like most Milligans, he can fight like a demon if he has to, and he has the build and the skill to bring down most people. He’s endlessly cheerful and incredibly loyal, and he thinks well on his feet. He’s also remarkably resilient, capable of taking huge amounts of abuse, both physical and emotional, before he snaps (although woe betide you if you touch his family or friends)

However, most of these strengths come back to bite him in the ass at some point or other. The worst of them is his loyalty and care for the people he loves, which not only tends to drag him into sticky situations but also pile on the worries sky-high. He’s also developed a bad habit of slacking off in subjects that don’t interest him, and despite his cheery attitude, he can be very awkward around new people. And he’s empathic enough that Bethan’s frequent psychotic breaks and depression can get him down almost as much as it does her.

Personality: From outside, Dan often comes across like his sister’s polar opposite; where she’s sullen and angry, he’s endlessly sunny and caring, practically feeding off other people’s happiness. He generally comes across as fairly laidback, although when it comes to his family he has a protective streak a mile wide, and tends to dive in if they’re in the slightest danger.

The fact is, however, he’s more like Bethan than most people realise. He is literally willing to kill to protect his family, for example, and has an irresistible urge to stand up for the underdogs in day-to-day life.

From the earliest years in their life, Dan has been the Nice One, and that persists; he hates to see anyone sad, he shares whatever they need with Bethan and Kieran, he does his best to be helpful, and he always has a smile and a friendly word for friends who are down in the dumps. He can be fairly shy and quiet with new people, unsure how to react to them, but with his friends he’s generally bubbling with laughter and jokes.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking he’s a pushover, though. He will stand his ground forever when it really matters, and as for getting physical, he broke an adult man’s nose when he was only 14. It would’ve gone a lot worse for said man, too, if nobody had restrained Dan.

He doesn’t let his negative feelings out to play all that much, though. Only to Bethan, and that not often. It’s not that he doesn’t have them, just that he reasons away his bitterness and sympathises away his hate. It’s probably not good for him, but hey.

Relationships: [Subject to updates once I start playing]
James Milligan (Father) - Dan is less close to his dad than Bethan is, but only just. He loves him with all his heart, but he doesn’t hero-worship him as much as she does.
Sarah Milligan (Mother) - From early childhood, Dan’s been a total mother’s boy; she has a lot of sympathy with his bouts of shyness, and is always on hand to encourage him when he loses his drive.
Bethan Milligan (Twin sister) - The centre of Dan’s world, the person who understands more than just his happy surface and lets him in when she lets nobody else near her.
Kieran Milligan (Kid brother) - Dan’s protégé and favourite annoying kid ever.
Amy Green (first girlfriend/best friend) - A mutual breakup led to a close friendship, although she occasionally feels pushed out by how close to his family he is.

Background: James Milligan, a New Yorker, met Sarah Combes on holiday in Ohio in 1982, and they had a brief, teenage fling, which was then promptly forgotten about. Several years later, Sarah met James again, this time in New York after university, and their romance rekindled. They complemented each other perfectly; he the tough, streetwise type, she the quiet country girl, and in 1989, they got married.

A couple of years later, James brought up the topic of kids, and in 1994 it magically came to pass. Unto them was born a pair of twins, for their sins; Bethan and Daniel Milligan. From the earliest of days, it was clear that aside from the date of their birth they had little in common; while Bethan as a baby was grabby, loud and fussy, Dan slept through almost every night, shared his toys, and very quickly learnt when crying for attention only made matters worse. But although as toddlers they fought, as twins inevitably do, it was clear how incredibly close they were. And though in kindergarten and elementary school, Dan initially hid behind his bolder sister, he swiftly began to blossom.

Inseparable though they naturally were, both of them made other friends, learnt to interact with other people, and their world expanded to explore more than just each other and their parents. When Kieran was born in 2004, Dan took an incredible amount of pride, despite any comments his friends made about it being a girly thing to do, in looking after his little brother, vying constantly to be allowed to babysit him, change him, look after him when he cried.

As the twins moved up to middle school and Bethan became more at ease with herself and with other people, Dan, happy that his sister was no longer lonely, felt able to immerse himself more into his other friendships. He was on the football team and in the math club, he was surrounded by friends and he slowly drifted away from Bethan, secure in the knowledge that she had her own friends and her own life.

So much so that he almost didn’t notice the change in his sister in 8th grade, when she got sulkier, snappier, more withdrawn and began lashing out at everyone, even him. He worried about her. He began watching her, watching how her mood changed, looking for patterns, needing to help. And he noticed that she was always, always at her worst after her increasingly frequent detentions with their French teacher, M. Hugo.

When he confronted her about it, she got furiously defensive enough at the mention of M. Hugo’s detentions that he knew he was right. Something was wrong. And with what little information he managed to squeeze out of her, he was fairly sure he knew what it was. But he had no proof. He had no evidence to present to protect her, and not even enough to prove it to himself. He knew he was right, and it was killing him not being able to do anything.

Then, shortly afterwards, as he was sat in French class, trying not to let the hatred in his eyes or the set of his jaw show, M. Hugo started in on Bethan again. Whether it was the words he used, how close he got to Dan’s precious sister, or how giving Bethan another of those despicable detentions reminded Dan of just how much she was going through as long as he did nothing, Dan saw red. Even he couldn’t say what triggered it, but he knows that in that moment all his suspicions were confirmed, and Milligan fighter’s blood boiled in his veins.

He’d jumped up, literally toppling his desk and throwing his books across the floor in the process, and before M. Hugo had any chance to react, he had a furious 14-year-old on top of him, attacking like a wild thing. “Don’t you dare! Don’t you fucking dare touch my sister again!”

Assault on a teacher notwithstanding, the things he yelled as his fists pounded into M. Hugo’s face in front of the horrified class counted as severe defamation of character. The term “wild allegations” was used in the police report. Later on, the other police report made it clear that the allegations were not a bit as wild as everyone had hoped. M. Hugo went to jail. Bethan and Dan went to therapy.

After the Hugo incident, James and Sarah pulled the kids out of school and moved to Ohio, where they were homeschooled. It wasn’t long before Dan got out of therapy; after all, given the circumstances, the assault charges were dropped, and it pretty quickly became evident that he didn’t have anything approaching anger management issues outside that. But life couldn’t just go back to normal; Bethan was still in therapy, and she rarely if ever smiled or laughed any more, just scowled and swore and lashed out. Dan didn’t resent it, but it hurt him, and he spent most of his time trying to protect Kieran from the repercussions of their experience, when he wasn’t working or studying.

When Bethan decided to go to high school, Dan wanted to go with her. But he knew full well she would hate him for that, and also that it was something she needed to do by herself. But now she’s getting into trouble again, he’s begun to worry. Her motorcycle crash was the final straw; he began filing the paperwork to transfer to McKinley later that week.
